Curriculum Vitae
Julie Darbyshire founded SQM Solutions in 2002 having previously worked as an Account Manager with the Legal Services Commission and subsequently as a consultant with JRS Consultants.

Julie recognised that the frenetic pace of the legal aid reform programme was placing a major strain on legal aid firms in terms of being able to interpret and respond to the varied proposals. SQM Solutions, under Julie’s leadership, has significant experience of working with a variety of legal aid practices with an excellent track record of helping firms maintain their LSC contracts whilst maximising their income from legal aid.

Julie is a graduate of Keele University with a BA Hons in Law and Management Science. She also holds the Diploma in Legal Practice from the Chester College of Law. Since graduating she has worked in both the public and private sector including managing the Litigation Department of a major American finance company and working in the Human Resources Department of a Public Limited Company before specialising in the field of legal consultancy.

One of the benefits of having left the LSC and converting from gamekeeper to poacher is being able to meet up with the firms I previously used to audit. Whilst many of them have evolved in Darwinian terms into more effective firms, you would be amazed at how many firms are still using vintage 1993 office manuals.

I'm not one who advocates change for the sake of it but there are limits. The best firms continually review their practices, challenging what they do and how they do it. In file review for example, it is common to see firms following the same largely administrative, mechanistic process that they have done for years. It isn't adding any value.

"... many firms are still using vintage 1993 office manuals"

File review should be working for you not the LAA or Lexcel. The worst thing I see is hundreds of file review checklists all pristinely ticked off as compliant with not a single observation or comment.

File reviews are the best tool you have available for checking the quality of work your firm does and for supervising your junior fee-earners. If you had an errant fee-earner are you confident your file review system would pick it up? How do you select files? Do you look for items peer reviewers look for or is it all ticks in boxes?

Challenging your file review system and re-examining your Office Manual is healthy and the mark of a good firm. Make it your next New Year's resolution...
